Ok, itapos;s time to get some facts straight about Joe Wurzelbacher (aka, "Joe the Plumber"). It is beyond absurd that McCain is trying to use this man to support his campaign, and itapos;s beyond time certain points about the man are brought up every time McCain mentions him so we can bury this nonsense once and for all.

First (and least), Joe is not actually a plumber: he does not have a license to be one. Instead, he works for a plumbing company.*

Second, his finances indicate that he has no intention of buying this company in the near future.

Third, Joe did not mention that this company he works for makes a GROSS profit of just over $250,000 (which is fairly respectable for a two-person business). This means, after expenses are figured in and the Adjusted Gross Income is determined, the company makes nowhere near enough to be taxed more by Obamaapos;s plan than McCainapos;s.

Fourth, Joe himself would actually pay less in taxes under Obamaapos;s plan than McCainapos;s. Ironically, he is actually the poster child for who Obama is targeting for his tax relief.

Fifth, Joeapos;s concern over paying taxes is strange considering he owes over $12,000 in back taxes to the state of Ohio.

In short, Joe is not a small business owner, but rather a jerk who tried to grab 15 minutes of fame while trying to "stick it" to Obama with false and misleading information. He misrepresented himself in order to make Obama look bad and then used his exposure to try to promote his own radical, right-wing perspective. Itapos;s bad enough that he presented a hypothetical situation as if it were reality, but then he distorted it in order to make it look like Obamaapos;s somehow "hurting" him. Of course, when the discrepancies were noticed by members of the press and he started to get challenged, he suddenly no longer wanted to talk to anyone.

I guess what Iapos;m trying to say is, it would be really nice if McCain would stop encouraging this misrepresentation. I realize heapos;s starting to get desperate and is now willing to try absolutely anything to get himself into the White House, but this is a disservice to his campaign, his followers, his reputation**, and the democratic process at large. At what point will his willingness to compromise his own integrity finally stop?

*Despite the fact that heapos;s not a plumber, presenting him as such is deeply problemtatic in another sense. Let me briefly echo Amy Poehlerapos;s point from last night: the average plumber makes several times what the average teacher makes. Who should we really be focused on?

**Once upon a time, I was a McCain fan. At least, as much of a fan as any left-wing radical could be. In 2000, I would have voted for him over Gore. Well, Iapos;d probably still have voted for Nader, but I wouldnapos;t have been upset if McCain had won (and would have been just fine with the idea that my vote for Ralph was actually a vote for him). Since then though, he has become almost unrecognizable to me. In fact, if you had told me even 4 years ago that in 2008 I would want to vote for Clinton before McCain, I would have said you were crazy.
